Is Meghan Trainor conveying the right message in All about that bass?

December 22, 2014

If you haven't heard all about that bass right now i'm pretty sure you are hiding in a cave or somewhere without any technology because this song has been repeating mercilessly through all radio stations and shops. I personally love the song because its so upbeat and is something that hasnt been directly addressed through a song, and that is accepting yourself for how you look but in a more fun and less emotional kind of song.

In the song Meghan addresses that she knows that ' she aint no size two ' , which is the typical size for a girl but she embraces her body issues by saying:
" You know I won't be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll
So if that's what you're into then go ahead and move along"

This shows how she is accepting that she would have a stick thin body figure and everyone just gotta accept how she looks or move on.
To me it just seems like a typical empowering song for girls who don't have what deem to be in the average scale in majority's eyes and i felt that the song pretty much speaks for itself, until i saw some nasty comments which got me so furious into writing this post.

This is just an example of how ignorant people are. Yes obviously when you are overweight you have associated health problems. This dude over here is just suggesting that all overweight people have to work out and shed those pounds. That i dont disagree but how is this song even promoting obesity as something acceptable? Meghan only tried to say that she doesnt have the body size of a typical girl and she is just a slightly bigger girl, and for god's sake do you even know her weight? Maybe she have to shed a few pounds to fall in the healthy BMI but im pretty sure she isnt obese to the point that she is risking of health problems so severe like heart attack and all. This song isnt about obesity at all, its all about different sizes of girls and how differently shaped is everyone's body, being smaller/bigger built, having more curves or a coca cola can figure. I really hate it when people just associate accepting your own body type = accepting obesity. BECAUSE IT IS NOT. I REPEAT. IT IS NOT. Yes she may not be skinny but hell she aint that obese either and obviously she has a bigger built and having a body that doesnt burn fat as easily as others which makes her chubbier, of course people like Lew wouldnt understand it because he thinks that everyone who is obese/chubby have no self control in terms of their diet and their exercising. Which brings me to my next point...

This is just a mindset of any girl who thinks that by working hard you WILL get the body you want. AGAIN, im stressing this... skinny is very subjective and if you think that you are skinny than good for you. Its not a matter of being skinny or not, its about being healthy. And how is "barely eat" implying that you are leading a healthy lifestyle? You would rather trade something so superficial like looks by starving yourself and all, thats your problem. Im sure you couldnt do it the conventional way: eating healthy less oil no snacks etcetc thats why you resort to starving yourself. This already just proves that no everyone who eat healthy will definitely be a size zero.(assuming that is what you call skinny). At least meghan does not have an eating disorder unlike you and im pretty sure she is more contented in accepting how she looks than you always stressing over your weight and counting your calories. I just feel so sad for girls who always starve themselves just to get a body they are satisfied... and the truth is that they never will, because they will always want to be skinnier... and skinnier and even when they already are they yearn for it more. So don't rub your unhappiness of not being able to eat whatever you want and restrict yourself onto others who eats an acceptable proportion of food and whatever you can never allow yourself to have because you are just too damn afraid that it will make your weight shoot up. You're just miserable. Enough said.

AGAIN, THIS SONG ISNT ABOUT ACCEPTING OVERWEIGHT, ITS ABOUT ACCEPTING THE DIFFERENT BODY FIGURE GOD DAMN. I know she mentioned that " boys like a little bit booty to hold at night " Im bringing booty back, go ahead and tell em skinny bitches that "
It seems as though she is insulting skinny people but really she is basically targeting at a specific group of people, mainly people who bullied her throughout her years of growing up as a girl who is more chubby. Why would she even insult skinny people? Its obviously because skinny people are the ones who always made fun of and bully people like Meghan with an unconventional figure that made her/whoever wrote that song in this manner. Obviously many just took the lyrics too literally and became offended. And in which lyrics did she say skinnier and healthier girls are not beautiful? She only said she has a big booty just to comfort herself and not to show off and prove that she has something skinny girls dont have, but embracing WHAT SHE HAS.

Jenny darling you are the embarrassment for typing such a shallow comment.

I guess people need to understand what the song true meaning of about, and that she never wrote this song with the intention of hurting anybody's feelings be it skinny or fat people. If im not wrong she didnt wrote this she just sang it because she has the chubbier figure to sing this song so that it doesnt look like an irony. Imagine Taylor Swift sang about this? I cant even imagine.

Meghan is embracing her body just the way it is. Studies have shown that severely overweight people have a hard time to lose them because they cultivate a bad eating habit from their parents since young. Its easier to maintain a skinny body than to lose weight, if you haven't realize that already. What about people who are on medications that made them chubby? There are so many reasons why someone may be chubby. Of course, there are people who are lazy and ignorant who dont want to do anything with their body even when their life is in danger prone to diseases like diabetes, but how can you generalize that all fat girls are lazy and dont want to do something about their weight? What if they are trying but you just dont see it? You can only lose so much in certain amount of time. Im sure chubby girls have tried to lose weight but may not have the correct methods which make them stay the same as well dont you think so? Think about your chubbier friends who are constantly eating so little during recess while normal people just consume the whole bowl of chicken rice and go for dessert after that and still stay skinny. Im sure everyone has that friend.

Its just saddening to know that people tend to generalize things like these. I just wish people would be more open minded about sensitive issues like body image and not always jump into conclusions and make sweeping statements. Thats all for now.
